Memorial Stadium

1982 (Senior)
McWhirter started every game for the Huskers as a senior. He led the defense in unassisted tackles with 53, finished second behind fellow four-year linebacker letterman Steve Damkroger in tackles with 69. Steve had a big game in the Big Eight title game when he had 14 tackles including a tackle for a loss and a quarterback sack in their win over Oklahoma,  28-24. 

1981 (Junior)
Steve was an alternate behind Brent Evans. He was in on 27 tackles, 11 of them unassisted, including one quarterback sack for a six yard loss. McWhirter had knee surgery after the season and missed all of spring practice. 

1980 (Sophomore)
McWhirter split starts with Williams as a sophomore. He finished the season with 31 tackles, 20 unassisted and had four tackles for loss for nine yards. The Huskers finished the 1980 season with a 10-2 record and a 31-17 Sun Bowl win against Mississippi State.

1979 (Freshman)
Steve earned a varsity letter as a freshman when he saw playing time behind Brent Williams. 

1978 (Redshirt)
Steve redshirted his first year as a Husker. 

Fairfield High School (Fairfield, Iowa)
Steve was an all-American, all-state and all-conference as a center and linebacker. He also lettered in wrestling, track and baseball.

Personal
Steve was an agricultural economics major, he is the son of Ed and Betty McWhirter.
