1984 (Senior)
Shane was the starting wingback for the Huskers in his senior season. Swanson would finish second in the Big Eight and third in the NCAA in punt returns with a 14.5 average on 19 returns. His only return for a touchdown was against Oklahoma State tied 3-3 with under nine minutes left in the game. Swanson raced down the sideline 49 yards with a Cowboy punt to score the game winner, also earning him Husker player of the week. Shane led the Huskers with 16 catches for 203 yards and one receiving touchdown. Swanson also rushed 15 times for 91 yards and one rushing touchdown. Swanson would play in the Sugar Bowl against Louisiana State. The 5-9 200 pound wingback would rush twice for 21 yards and record two catches for 21 yards.
1983 (Junior)
Swanson was a backup for most of his junior season, behind All-American Irving Fryar. Shane still managed to catch five passes for 66 yards, including a one-yard touchdown from Nate Mason vs. Colorado. Swanson also returned five punts for 10 yards, and rushed three times for 25 yards.
1982 (Sophomore)
Swanson was listed as NU’s No.4 receiver. Shane would still shine, recording 10 receptions for 111 yards, also rushing six times for 47 yards.
1981 (Freshman)
Shane was the starting win back for the 5-0 Huskers’ freshman team. Swanson recorded five passes for 69 yards, rushing three times for 12 yards, returning three kickoffs with an average of 18.3 yards per return.
Personal
Son of Swede and Mardee Swanson, Shane Swanson was born on Oct. 4, 1962, in Hershey, Neb. Shane enrolled at Nebraska as a recreation major. Swanson would be drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 12th round pick 315. Swanson wouldn't start a game for the Browns, later being cut. The Denver Broncos would later sign him and Swanson would start three games for the Broncos in the 1987 season. Swanson recorded six receptions for 87 yards and six punt returns for 112 yards. Swanson also had three kickoff returns for 91 yards.
