1984 (Senior)
McCashland was the starting monster for the Huskers in his senior season. McCashland’s top game was against UCLA when he was in on seven tackles and broke up one pass. Mike would lead the Huskers defensive backs in tackles for loss as a senior with four. McCashland would have 40 tackles on the season with 14 of them being unassisted, two interceptions. Mike would start in the 1985 Sugar Bowl against Louisiana State. McCashland would record five tackles and one pass breakup during that game.
1983 (Junior)
McCashland started all of the regular-season games at monster for the Huskers. Led NU defensive backs in tackles with 57, 33 of them were unassisted, he also led the group in tackles for loss with four for 13 yards. Mike played a total of 519 minutes for the Huskers, sharing the team lead with All-Big Eight safety Bret Clark. Top career tackle day came against Iowa State, when he was in on nine with seven of those being unassisted. His best overall day came against Nebraska’s narrow 14-10 win at Oklahoma State when he was in on six stops, including one behind the line for a loss of nine yards, and grabbed his first career interception to stop a Cowboy threat late in the first quarter. Mike also recorded another interception against Kansas State. McCashland also led Nebraska in tackles in the 44-6 win over defending national champion Penn State in Kickoff Classic. Mike would also start in the 1984 Orange Bowl against Miami, where he recorded four tackles with one of them being assisted.
1982 (Sophomore)
McCashland was a reserved letterman. Mike would record eight tackles with seven of them being unassisted.
1981 (Redshirt)
Mike McCashland would redshirt in his second season with the Huskers in 1981.
1980 (Freshman)
McCashland would walk-on and start for the Huskers’ 5-0 freshman team at monster.
Personal
Son of Dick and Pat McCashland, Mike McCashland was born on June 15, 1961, in Lincoln, Neb. Dick McCashland was a lettered fullback and center for the Huskers in 1956-58. Mike enrolled at Nebraska as a criminal justice major. McCashland would sign for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1985 season, and would later be cut from the team.
