1987 (Senior)
Clayton made the transition from offense to defense, and was the Huskers No. two left cornerback. Clayton lettered during the 1987 season, helping the Blackshirts rank sixth nationally in scoring defense (12.1 ppg), eighth in total defense (264.7 ypg) and ninth in rushing defense (107.0 ypg). He helped the Big Red to a 10-2 overall record and a trip to the 1988 Fiesta Bowl against Florida State.
1986 (Junior)
Clayton appeared in six games for the Huskers, playing quarterback. Completing two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown. Clayton also rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
1985 (Sophomore)
Clayton was Nebraska's starting quarterback during the 1985 season. He completed 28 of 78 passes for 602 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 83 rushes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. He led the Husker to a 9-3 record and had a career game against Oklahoma State where he passed for 161 yards and a touchdown, to go along with two rushing touchdowns.
1984 (Redshirt)
Clayton Redshirted his second season at Nebraska.
1983 (Freshman)
Clayton shared quarterback duties on the 5-0 freshman team. Completing 18 passes for 51 yards and rushing for 160 yards. Clayton led the freshman team with five touchdowns.
Orlando Jones High School
Clayton was an All-State performer for Coach Reggie Beverly at Orlando Jones High School in Florida, despite missing half his senior year with an injury. As a junior he passed for 1,00 yards and rushed for 500 yards.
