1984 (Senior)
Mark started the pre-season with ankle problems. Even with the ankle problems, Behning would start every single regular-season game for the Huskers. Helping the Huskers rush for 3422 yards, which was second nationally. The Huskers’ would also average (427.5 ypg) for total offense. The 6-6 290 pound tackle would also appear in the Sugar bowl victory over Louisiana State 27-10. Behning would later be awarded All-Big Eight by the AP and UPI. Mark would also be awarded All-American third-team by Football News. Mark would later be invited to play in the 1985 Senior bowl, playing for the North squad.
1983 (Junior)
Behning would get his first career start at Oklahoma State on Oct. 8 after Senior John Sherlock went down with a knee injury the week before. After a slow start, Behning would be the main guy at left tackle for the rest of the season. Helping Nebraska lead the nation in rushing offense (401.7 ypg) and scoring offense (52.0 ppg) while averaging 546.7 total offensive yards.
1982 (Sophomore)
Mark would be a lettered reserve and a back-up for most of the season. During his time as a reserve he would be one of the profound lifters of the Huskers. Behning would post a 470 pound bench press which was best on the team, and a 900 pound hip sled.
1981 (Redshirt)
Mark Behning would redshirt in his second season with the Huskers in 1981.
1980 (Freshman)
Mark was recruited in 1980, for the Huskers’ 5-0 freshman team. Starting at right tackle in every game for the freshman team.
Personal
Son of Jerry and Irene Behning, Mark Behning was born on Sept. 26, 1961, in Denton, Texas. Mark has one brother Mike and one sister Karen. Mark was named in All-State, All-Area, All-District, All-Dallas as a senior at Denton High School in 1979. He was named to the Super team of Texas as a senior, also to the Texas Class AA all-decade team. Behning would enroll at Nebraska as a construction management major. After his senior season at Nebraska he would be taken 47# overall in the 1985 NFL draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Playing there for three seasons until he was cut in training camp. Behning would later be picked up by the San Diego Chargers. An achilles tendon injury would later end his NFL career. Behning would later serve as a teacher and coach at his alma mater Denton High school. Behning would later be inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 2019. Mark is now a construction project manager for Golden Sands General Contractors, Inc., based in Dallas, Texas.
