1993 (Senior)
A leader on a dominant Nebraska offensive line, Academic All-American Ken Mehlin (pronounced MAY-lin) started Nebraska’s first seven games as a senior before moving to a starting position at right guard for the final four regular-season games and the 1994 Federal Express Orange Bowl national championship game against Florida State. Mehlin, who earned first-team All-Big Eight honors from the conference coaches, helped the Huskers capture the Big Eight rushing title by averaging 287.9 yards per game, which ranked third nationally. The Big Red also led the Big Eight and ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense at 38.3 points per game.
An undersized 6-0, 275-pound former walk-on from the small town of Humboldt, Neb., Mehlin started all 22 regular-season games and the 1993 and 1994 Orange Bowls over his final two seasons among his 26 career games on the Husker O-line. He helped the Huskers to three Big Eight titles and back-to-back NCAA rushing crowns in 1991 and 1992. He was a two-time GTE Academic All-District VII selection and a two-time Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honoree.
1992 (Junior)
Mehlin started all 11 regular-season games for the Big Eight champion Huskers and the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl. He helped power the Big Red to its third NCAA rushing title in the past four years by averaging 328.2 yards per game on the ground. Mehlin and the O-line paved the way for 40 rushing touchdowns and 15 more through the air, as the Huskers ranked second nationally in scoring at 38.8 points per game. A first-team Academic All-Big Eight pick, Mehlin joined fellow Husker offensive linemen Jim Scott and Rob Zatechka as GTE Academic All-District VII selections. A former walk-on, Mehlin earned a scholarship prior to the 1992 season.
1991 (Sophomore)
Mehlin earned his first of three varsity letters after playing in four regular-season games as a reserve offensive guard. He helped the Big Red to their seventh NCAA rushing title in 12 seasons by rolling to 353.2 yards per game on the ground. He also played against Miami in the 1992 Orange Bowl.
1990 (Redshirt)
Mehlin redshirted in his second season at Nebraska in 1990.
1989 (Freshman)
A walk-on, Mehlin started at left guard as a true freshman for the 3-1-1 Husker JV team that averaged 398 yards per game of total offense.
Humboldt High School
Mehlin was a two-time, two-way, eight-man all-state player for Coach John James at Humboldt High School. Mehlin played offensive guard and linebacker. He lettered four times each in football, basketball and track.
