1993 (Junior)
A two-year letterman for the Huskers at offensive tackle, Joel Gesky (pronounced GUESS-kee) helped Nebraska to a Big Eight championship and the conference rushing title while ranking third nationally with 287.9 yards per game on the ground in 1993. Gesky helped the Huskers to an unbeaten regular season and a trip to the 1994 Federal Express Orange Bowl national championship game against Florida State.
1992 (Sophomore)
Gesky earned his first varsity letter as a Husker by backing up All-Big Eight sophomore Zach Wiegert at right tackle. Gesky played in 10 of Nebraska’s 11 regular-season games, missing only the contest with Washington. He also played in the 1993 Federal Express Orange Bowl against Florida State. He helped the Big Red capture its third NCAA rushing title in a four-year span by averaging 328.2 yards per game. Nebraska also ranked second nationally in scoring (38.8 ppg) and 11th in total offense (438.2 ypg).
1991 (Redshirt)
Gesky redshirted in his second season at Nebraska.
1990 (Freshman)
A scholarship lineman, Gesky started at right tackle for the Husker junior varsity team in 1990.
Chicago Marist High School
An all-state and all-metro Chicago offensive guard for Coach Tony Pietrazak at Chicago Marist, Gesky was named the MVP of the Catholic League. A prep All-American in football, he was also a member of Marist’s 25-0 state championship wrestling team.
Personal
The son of Gerald Gesky and Adele Moan, Joel was born in Chicago. He has three stepbrothers and one stepsister. He earned his bachelor’s degree as a business administration from Nebraska and chose not to return to the Huskers for the 1994 season. Gesky grew up just three blocks away from fellow Husker offensive lineman Bryan Pruitt in Midlothian, Ill.
