1982 (Senior)
Merrel earned post season honors being named second-team All-Big Eight from both wire services. He was second among Husker linemen in total tackles (54) and led the Black Shirts with six tackles for losses totaling 18 yards. Jeff also totaled one sack for five yards, recovered one fumble and had two pass break ups. 

1981 (Junior)
The best game of Jeff's career came as a junior against Florida State, when he had nine tackles and two quarterback sacks in his first collegiate start. He finished the season with five sacks (which led all down linemen) for 32 yards. Jeff's standout junior season earned him post season honors for the first time in his career being named honorable-mention All-Big eight. 

1980 (Sophomore)
Jeff earned his first varsity letter while playing as an alternate behind Hineline. He finished his first season on varsity with 22 total tackles, 10 unassisted, four tackles for a loss of ten yards and two fumble recoveries. 

1979 (Redshirt)
Jeff redshirted his second season as a Husker. 

1978 (Freshman)
Merrell started at middle guard for the 1979 undefeated Husker team. 

Huntsville Butler High School
Merrel earned all-american honors as an offensive tackle and defensive end. Jeff is an education major and is the son of Idell Merrell.
