1984 (Senior)
An All-Big Eight offensive guard for the Huskers as a senior in 1984, Greg Orton earned two letters on Nebraska’s offensive line. With Orton paving the way at right guard, the Big Red won the Big Eight rushing title while ranking third nationally with 311.1 yards per game. Nebraska also ranked sixth nationally in scoring (32.6 ppg). Orton followed Outland and Lombardi Trophy winner Dean Steinkuhler on NU’s O-line at the right guard position.
Orton signed an NFL free agent contract following his college career and started three games as an offensive guard for the Detroit Lions in 1987.
1983 (Junior)
Orton was an all-purpose offensive lineman for the Big Red as a junior in 1983, playing both tackle and guard on one of the most dominant offensive lines in NCAA history. The Huskers led the nation in scoring (52.0 ppg) and rushing offense (401.7 ypg) while ranking second nationally in total offense (546.7 ypg). Orton helped I-back Mike Rozier capture the Heisman Trophy while leading the Big Red to an unbeaten regular season before a 31-30 loss to Miami in the Orange Bowl national championship game. Orton earned his first varsity letter in 1983, when he was the alternate at left guard behind Harry Grimminger. However, Orton started the Missouri game at left tackle.
1982 (Sophomore)
Orton contributed to the Huskers but did not earn a varsity letter in his third season at Nebraska in 1982.
1981 (Redshirt)
Orton redshirted in his second season for the Big Red in 1981.
1980 (Freshman)
A walk-on from Nebraska City, Orton played guard behind Anthony Thomas on the Husker freshman team in 1980.
Nebraska City High School
Orton was a standout for Coach Loyd Maskell at Nebraska City High School as a senior in 1979. Orton was one of four former Pioneers on NU’s top units heading into the 1984 season, joining All-Big Eight safety Bret Clark, No. 2 fullback Scott Porter, and No. 3 weakside linebacker Chad Daffer.
