1987 (Senior)
Welniak was a co-captain during his final season as a husker. He contributed 29 tackles, 17 unassisted, four tackles for loss and recovered one fumble. Welkniak had a career high in tackles with five vs. Kansas State. Welniak started the first two games for the Huskers, helping them top a 10-1 regular season record.
1986 (Junior)
Welniak was a standout special teams player for the Huskers. As a reserve strong-side linebacker behind Kevin Parsons and Leyroy Etienne, he played in every game and finished the year with ten tackles, eight of them being unassisted.
1985 (Sophomore)
Welniak earned his first letter during the 1985 season. He helped the Huskers to a 10-2 record and a Sugar Bowl win vs. LSU.
1984 (Redshirt)
Welniak redshirted in his second year at Nebraska.
1983 (Freshman)
Welniak was an alternate weakside linebacker behind future three-time All-Big Eight, Marc Munford. He finished his freshman season with 10 total tackles.
Ord High School
Welniak was a two-time All-Conference as a running back and a Class B All-State linebacker as a senior for Coach Gene Suhr. He also lettered in basketball and track.
Personal
Doug is son e of Mrs. Betty Welniak has four brothers and two sisters. His younger brother Randy was a quarterback at Wyoming. Doug was born in Ord Nebraska.
