Singleton played at both St. Helena College & Career Academy in Louisiana and Lincoln (Neb.) East High School. He was an all-district selection as a wide receiver.

Singleton, whose full name is Darrell Singleton Jr., is the son of Darrell Singleton and Ursula Tyree. DJ is a child, youth and family studies major.
