1985 (Senior)
Watkins was the most experienced of Nebraska's defensive backs at the start of the season. He started the first five games at left cornerback, but aggravated an old achilles injury and missed out on the Missouri and Colorado games. He recorded 13 tackles, nine of which were unassisted, he also intercepted a pass against Illinois which he returned for 24 yards. Nebraska finished the season with a 9-3 record and an appearance in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl against Michigan.
1984 (Junior)
Dennis was an alternate behind both left corner (Dave Burke) and right corner (Neil Harris). Watkins started four games in place of Harris at right cornerback - vs. Missouri, Colorado, Kansas State and Kansas, when Nebraska opened the game in their “Hawk” defense which they used their quickest players. Dennis finished the year with 20 total tackles, 15 unassisted, but his best regular season game came against UCLA when he did not record a tackle but instead had three pass break-ups and blocked a punt. He had a tackle high of six against Syracuse. He finished the season with five pass break ups and two interceptions, returned for 37 yards. He had a standout game against LSU in the Sugar Bowl where he had three unassisted tackles and three pass break ups.
Northeast Illinois University
Watkins spent two years at Northeast Illinois University, then contacted several NCAA Division I-A schools about transferring, and when he heard from Nebraska the choice was easy. “Nebraska responded right away,” Watkins said. “When I got a call from Tom Osborne himself, I knew how they felt about walksons. Other schools just send a letter from an assistant coach.”
Chicago Carver High School
Watkins was overlooked by major college recruiters during his senior year. He was an all-conference wide receiver for Coach Larry Jackson. He also played defensive back and lettered in track twice.
Personal
