1976 (Senior)
Gillespie would have been a contender for the starting spot at I-Back as a senior if not for a nagging leg injury which kept him sidelined. Even injured, Gillespie managed to score two touchdowns and rush for 56 yards in 15 attempts. Dave helped Nebraska finish the season with a 9-3-1 record and an Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl win over Texas Tech, 27-24.
1975 (Junior)
Dave was an alternate I-Back to John O’Leary and Monte Anthony. He was the Huskers fourth leading rusher in 1975, gaining 238 yards on 68 carries and four touchdowns. His best game came against Colorado, picking up 106 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Dave also caught two passes for 15 yards and returned two kicks for 21 yards. The Huskers finished the season with a 10-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl appearance against Arizona State.
1974 (Sophomore)
Dave had a solid sophomore season. He rushed 67 times for 254 yards and 5 touchdowns, caught 2 passes for 59 yards and returned 2 kick offs for 44 yards. Nebraska finished the season with a 9-3 record and a Sugar Bowl win against Florida (13-10).
1973 (Freshman)
Dave was the leading rusher on the 1973 Husker freshman team that finished the season with a 4-1 record. He rushed 79 times for 292 yards and led the Huskers with two touchdowns. Gillespie was also active on kickoff return when he returned eight kicks for 181 yards and a team best 22.8 yards per return.
Westmont High School (Saratoga, Calif.)
Dave gained All-Conference and All-City honors under Coach Don Stagnard. Dave was a physical education major and is the son of James and Dorothy Gillespie.
