Dan Wingard Season 1985

1985 (Senior)
Despite a tough start to the season Wingard rebounded and possibly became Nebraska’s most effective punter ever. He averaged just 35.2 yards on nine punts in the Huskers first two games then came on to average 42.0 for the season and ranked third in the Big Eight. His booming kicks and fine Huker coverage allowed Nebraska to rank ninth nationally in net punting at 39.9 yards per pick. Opponents were able to pick up only 42 yards on returns of Wingard’s punts. Of 46 kicks, 15 were downed or went out of bounds inside the opponents’ 20-yard lines. Six were touchbacks. Dan finished the season with a long punt of 70 yards. 

1984 (Junior)
Wingard finished his junior season with one PAT attempt which he made and one punt of 38 yards. 

1983 (Sophomore)
Wingard lettered as a reserve kicker, he had one field goal attempt for 46 yards vs. Wyoming and one punt for 46 yards.

1982 (Redshirt)
Wingard redshirted his second season as a Husker. 

1981 (Freshman)
Wingard was a walkon his freshman year but saw action on the Husker freshman team. He averaged 39.0 yards on 13 punts, including a 70-yarder against the Wyoming junior varsity, He missed his only PAT attempt that season. 

Omaha Westside
Wingard was all-state, all-metro for coach Dan Young where he punted, place kicked, played quarterback and split end for the present Huskers Freshman coach. He also lettered in basketball and track for the Warriors and was the 1981 Omaha B’nai B’rith athlete of the year.

Dan was majoring in advertising and is the son of Daniel and Madeline Wingard.
