1980 (Senior)
Craig was probably the best alternate running back for three straight years (1978-80). In 1980, as an alternate to Jarvis Redwine, although Johnson did start the Kansas, Oklahoma state and Sun Bowl contests, he gained 379 yards on 72 carries and six touchdowns. For his efforts, he earned Honorable Mention All-Big Eight. Nebraska finished the season with a Sun Bowl win against Mississippi State (31-17).
1979 (Junior)
Johnson was the hero during many of the 1979 football Saturdays, even though he almost redshirted the season. As a junior he rushed for 544 yards on 96 carries, for an average of 5.7 yards per carry and six touchdowns.
Against Iowa when I.M. Hipp was injured, Johnson and Redwine led the Huskers to a come from behind 24-21 win as Johnson rushed for 39 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Against Missouri, both Redwine and Hipp were injured, Johnson came in to run for 98 yards on 17 carries. Nebraska finished the season with a 10-2 record and an appearance in the Cotton Bowl against Houston.
1978 (Sophomore)
Craig rushed 40 times for 370 yards and four touchdowns, as well as two receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. Against Kansas he ran for 192 yards and scored twice while also catching a 78 yard touchdown pass from Tim Hager, for that effort he was named the Nebraska Offensive Player-of-the-Game. Nebraska finished the season with a 9-3 record and an appearance in the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma.
1977 (Freshman)
Craig was a star halfback with the 1977 freshman team.
Omaha Westside High School
Craig was an All-State running back where he was Omaha’s leading rusher and scorer. He is the son of Jerry and Karen Johnson. Craig signed as a free agent with New England in the NFL.
