1993 (Senior)
Bennett was the starting kicker for the Husker’s in all 11 regular season games and in the Orange Bowl game vs. Florida State. Bennett was 53-55 on extra points and 6-11 on field goals, scoring 71 points for Nebraska. Bennett was 6-9 on field goals under 50 yards, going 0-2 outside of 50. In the 1994 Orange Bowl, Bennett connected from 27 yards, but missed left on a 45 yard attempt as time expired.
1992 (Junior)
Bennett was Nebraska’s second-leading scorer in ’92 with 71 points only behind Calvin Jones (90 points). At 6.5 points per games, Bennett ranked fifth in the Big Eight and 60th in the nation. Bennett had not missed a PAT since his second attempt of the Oklahoma State game, which ended a 32 PATs made streak. He was 7-10 on field goal attempts with a 6-6 mark under 40 yards. His season long kick was 42 in the season finale against Kansas State in Tokyo, his only attempt made over 40 yards on the season. Bennett didn’t have any punts as the backup to four-year starter Mike Stigge.
1991 (Sophomore)
Nebraska’s third leading scorer, Bennett scored 78 points, six behind I-backs Calvin Jones and Derek Brown. At 7.09 points per game, he was sixth in the Big Eight and 29th in the NCAA. He was 45 of 48 on PATs with the new, narrower goal posts and 11 of 18 on field goals. Inside 50 yards he was 11 of 16. Bennett hit his longest collegiate field goal, 47 yards, at Kansas. Also made two field goals in a game three times in 1991 (against Utah State, Colorado, and Iowa State). He had a career-high five attempts vs. Arizona State in 1991 (one made). He also served as backup punter behind Mike Stigge and made two unassisted tackles on kick coverage.
1990 (Freshman)
Bennett handles kickoffs for Nebraska and was 2-of-2 on PATs, both kicks coming vs. Northern Illinois.
1989 (Redshirt Freshman)
Redshirted his first year as a scholarship athlete.
Before Nebraska (Lakeview Centennial HS)
Bennett was an all-district and All-Metroplex (Dallas/Fort Worth) kicker for Coach Tommy Watkins. He was 7/10 of field goals of 40-or-more yards, he recorded the longest field goal in the state his senior year at 53 yards. As a punter, he averaged 43 yards. He also played quarterback as a sophomore and junior, concentrating on kicking his senior season.
Personal
Byron is the son of Ted and Kay Bennett, he was born December 7, 1970 in Dallas, Texas. Studying criminal justice, he graduated in December of 1993.
