1982 (Senior)
Mathison was the hero of Huskers 23-19 win over Missouri in 1982, Mathison came off the bench when starter Turner Gill suffered a concussion to hit five of ten passes for 35 yards and rushed for 37 more, including game-winning 16 yard touchdown, to turn a 13-9 deficit to a 23-13 lead. Bruce had the longest touchdown pass of the season to Ricky Simmons vs. New Mexico State, 61 yards. He passed for 182 yards and rushed 105 more as a senior.
1981 (Junior)
Mathison lettered as a reserve and had a fine showing vs. Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Mathison entered both games when they were firmly under control and couldn't show off his passing ability. He rushed three times for 14 yards and a one yard touchdown vs. the Wildcats and three times for 25 yards and an 18 yard touchdown vs. the Cowboys. He also had a 16 yard run in the Huskers 37-14 win at Oklahoma. He finished the season with 16 rushes for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
1980 (Sophomore)
Mathison was a non-letting reserve as a sophomore.
1979 (Redshirt)
Bruce redshirted his second season at Nebraska.
1978 (Freshman)
Bruce started for the undefeated Husker freshman team. As a freshman he completed 23 of 53 passes with four interruptions for 410 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 41 times for 163 yards and six touchdowns.

Bruce was an outstanding quarterback or Coach Larry Hoff. He also lettered in Basketball and track.
Personal
Mathison was a health education major and is the son of Richard and Charlene Mathison. Bruce finished his 5 year NFL career appearing in 18 games, starting nine of them. He threw for 2177 yards and seven touchdowns.
