Bob Thornton

1973 (Senior)
Bob was a two-year starter who played a key role in helping the Nebraska pass defense lead the nation. As a senior, Thorton had 40 tackles, 17 unassisted and 23 assisted. He recovered two fumbles, intercepted five passes and broke up two others. Also returned punts for a total of 68 yards on four returns. Nebraska ranked second in total defense at 245.8 yards per game, behind only Oklahoma. 

1972 (Junior)
Bob took over the starting job midway through the season and did an outstanding job. He intercepted two passes and returned them for a total of 35 yards. He finished with 13 tackles, ten unassisted and broke up a pass. Nebraska had the best defense in the Big Eight, allowing just 219.2 yards per game. The Huskers ranked first in passing defense (106.5 ypg) and second in rushing defense (112.7 ypg).

1971 (Redshirt- Transfer)
Thornton redshirted after transferring from Los Angeles Harbor College, Wilmington, Calif.. 

Harbor, Calif. Junior College (Wilmington, California)
Bob played his first two seasons of college ball at the junior college level being coached by Bob Rhea. He came to Nebraska as both a defensive back and a wide receiver. 

Narbonne High School (Lomita, California)
Thornton was All-League under Coach Jack Bobinette. Bob was majoring in physical education and is the son of Roberta Thornton. Bob played in the All-American Bowl and later signed with the Omaha Mustangs.
