Before Nebraska (Cozad HS/Ashland-Greenwood HS)
Schuster played three varsity seasons for Cozad High School before playing his final season at Ashland-Greenwood. In his four-year career, Schuster rushed for nearly 3,500 yards. As a senior at Ashland-Greenwood, Schuster helped the Bluejays to a perfect 9-0 regular-season record and a No. 1 seed in the Class C-1 state playoffs. He was named an all-state honoree after rushing for 1,389 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. Schuster finished with 2,065 rushing yards on 430 carries in his three seasons at Cozad. As a junior for Cozad, Schuster had 139 carries for 837 yards and four touchdowns. He helped the Haymakers earn a spot in the Class C-1 state playoffs and was recognized as an honorable-mention all-state performer. Schuster finished with 201 carries for 770 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore. In his freshman season, Schuster had 90 carries for 458 yards and three touchdowns. Schuster was the first walk-on member of Nebraska's class, committing to join the Huskers in September of 2020. He received interest from several programs but shut down his recruitment after committing to Nebraska.

Personal
Matthew was born on July 12, 2002. He is the son of Brian and Chelsea Schuster. Matthew has not declared a major. His father, Brian, was a fullback on two Nebraska national championships teams in the 1990s.
