2022 (Sophomore)
Logan Smothers played in five games in 2022, completing 10-of-19 passes for 96 yards while rushing 12 times for 28 yards. He lined up at quarterback for one snap against Northwestern, keeping the ball for a seven-yard rush. Smothers had a 10-yard carry from the quarterback spot against Georgia Southern. He played one series against No. 17 Illinois and rushed twice for six yards while completing his only pass. Against Minnesota, Smothers saw his most extensive action of the season, completing 5-of-10 passes for 80 yards with four rushing yards. Smothers played extensively at No. 3 Michigan, finishing 4-of-8 passing for 15 yards with one rushing yard.
2021 (Freshman)
Smothers played in six games in 2021 with a start against No. 17 Iowa in the final game of the year. On the season, Smothers completed 23-of-33 passes for 317 yards while rushing 37 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
He made his Husker debut by playing a little more than a quarter in Nebraska’s win over Fordham. Smothers completed 4-of-7 passes for 50 yards and rushed four times for 36 yards. The next week against Buffalo, Smothers completed a career-long 54-yard pass in his only attempt, and he had a two-yard carry. Smothers saw action for one series at No. 20 Michigan State when starter Adrian Martinez was being evaluated for an injury. Smothers rushed three times for 11 yards against the Spartans and completed 1-of-2 passes for four yards. Smothers completed an 11-yard pass against Northwestern and rushed four times for 20 yards. He was the quarterback for the Huskers’ final drive of the first half at No. 19 Wisconsin, rushing once for one yard.
In his first career start against No. 17 Iowa, Smothers completed 16-of-22 passes for 198 yards. He also led Nebraska with 24 carries for 64 yards and two rushing touchdowns, the first touchdowns of his career. Smothers had a career-long 24-yard rush against the Hawkeyes, while his 24 carries were the most by a Husker quarterback since Jammal Lord had 30 carries against Texas A&M in 2002.
2020 (Covid Season)
Smothers did not play in a game in his first season at Nebraska, but he was a member of the travel roster for all five road games in 2020.
Before Nebraska (Muscle Shoals HS)
Smothers was a star high school quarterback in Alabama for four years. Smothers played his senior season at Muscle Shoals High School after his father, Shane, became the Trojans’ offensive coordinator. Logan played his first three seasons at Athens High School.
As a senior at Muscle Shoals, Smothers helped the team to a 12-1 record by passing for more than 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns and rushing for more than 800 yards and 13 scores. For his efforts, Smothers was a second-team all-state selection in the state’s second-largest class, and he earned honorable-mention all-state honors regardless of class. Following his high school career, Smothers was selected to participate in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game
Smothers played his first three seasons at Athens High School. He completed 65 percent of his passes and threw for 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior, adding 832 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. As a sophomore, Smothers threw for 2,041 yards and 14 touchdowns, while rushing for 719 yards and eight touchdowns. He threw for more than 1,500 yards and rushed for nearly 500 yards as a freshman while accounting for 15 total touchdowns.
Smothers also ran track at Athens High School, finishing fourth in the 400 meters at the 2019 Alabama state indoor championship with a personal-best time of 51.34. Smothers also had a top-10 finish at the state championship in the 60-meter dash.
Smothers was a four-star recruit who was ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the country by Rivals, which also tabbed Smothers as the nation’s No. 171 overall recruit. In the 247Sports Composite rankings, Smothers ranked among the top 15 dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Smothers was the first commitment in Nebraska’s 2020 class, and he chose the Huskers over offers from Louisville and Ole Miss, among others.
Personal
Logan was born on Oct. 12, 2000, and he is the son of Shane and Amy Smothers. A child, youth and family studies major, Logan earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2023.
