Bretz helped Omaha Westside to a state runner-up finish as a junior and a state championship as a senior. He was one of five Nebraska natives in the Huskers' 2021 signing class.

In his senior season, Bretz had 54 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, three interceptions, four passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery, according to MaxPreps. Bretz was named to the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska and Lincoln Journal Star Super-State teams as a senior. As a junior, Bretz earned honorable-mention all-state honors from both the World-Herald and Journal Star. Bretz was also an accomplished diver for Westside. He took second place at the state meet as a sophomore and third place as a junior.

Bretz chose Nebraska over several other scholarship offers, including Buffalo, Kansas State and Wyoming. He was ranked among the top 50 safeties nationally by Rivals.
