Gunnar was a three-year starting lineman for Southeast. The Omaha World-Herald named him a first-team All-Nebraska selection as a senior, and he was a second-team All-Nebraska pick as a junior. Gottula was also chosen as a first-team Super-State honoree by the Lincoln Journal Star as a senior, and he was a second-team Super-State selection as a junior. He also earned honorable-mention all-state accolades as a sophomore. Lincoln Southeast advanced to the playoffs in each of Gottula’s three seasons as a starter, including a run to the Class A quarterfinals in 2020.

Gottula was ranked as a four-star recruit by Rivals, which ranked him among the top 35 offensive tackles in the country. He also visited Iowa State and had offers from Iowa and Kansas State, among others.
