Mikel Thomas struggled with injuries in 2009, as he redshirted the entire indoor season and was only able to compete at two meets outdoors... opened 2009 as the anchor leg of the 10th-place 4x1,600-meter relay team at the Drake Relays (17:16.77)... his lone individual competition came the following week at the Nebraska Quad, where he placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:28.00.
2008 (Freshman)
Thomas posted two victories during the indoor season before competing at the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Midwest Regional during the outdoor season... won the mile at the Prairie Wolf (4:12.87) and Nebraska Last Chance (4:14.74) meets during the indoor season... rapidly developed into an outstanding 3,000-meter steeplechaser during the outdoor season... posted runner-up finishes at the Concordia Invitational and the Ward Haylett Invitational... ran a then-personal-best 8:58.74 at the Ward Haylett Invitational, which ranked 13th on the Nebraska all-time performance list... finished 11th at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships (9:47.58) and 12th at the NCAA Midwest Regional (9:09.24)... ended the outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Junior Championships in Columbus, Ohio, with a personal-best time of 8:58.67.
Before Nebraska (Clovis HS)
Thomas qualified for the California state track and field championships three times in the 3,200-meter run under Coach Rob Brenner... finished fourth (9:04.56) as a junior, followed by a fifth-place finish as a senior (9:11.30), despite nursing a quadriceps injury much of the spring... ran a personal-best 4:14.86 in the 1,600 at the 2007 Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions... in 2006 at the Arcadia Invitational, ran a career-best time of 8:59.81 in the 3,200... was also the 2006 California Division II cross country state champion.
