2005 Outlook: One of three first-team All-Nebraska pitchers in this spring’s recruiting class, Ryan Hines continues Omaha’s tradition of turning out top pitchers ? Possesses excellent size at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds and has a tremendous upside ? Struggled at times in the fall, but has been one of NU’s top workers in off-season conditioning ? Will likely redshirt, as he continues to refine his delivery ? Has already made great strides, as he is throwing in the mid-to-upper 80s, a jump of nearly 10 miles per hour since he arrived on campus ? Is an extremely hard worker who is putting himself in position to be a major part of the Husker pitching staff as early as next season.
Millard North High School: Hines was one of the state’s top pitchers in 2004 playing for Coach Dave Cork at Millard North High School ? Tabbed a first-team all-state selection by the Lincoln Journal Star and a second-team honoree by the Omaha World-Herald as a senior after helping MNHS to a 28-12 record and a state runner-up showing ? Went 8-2 with a 2.05 ERA, striking out 67 in 71.2 innings while holding foes to a .184 average ? Spent the first two years of high school at Creighton Prep before transferring to Millard North as a junior, when he went 3-3 with a 3.94 ERA to earn first-team all-conference and honorable-mention all-metro accolades ? Also was an accomplished swimmer, qualifying for the state meet four straight years ? Named MNHS Swimmer of the Year, after placing fifth in the 100-meter freestyle, fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay ? An outstanding student who graduated with a 3.86 GPA and was a member of the honor roll all four years of high school ? Chose Nebraska over Creighton, Washington, Colorado School of Mines, Washington State and Evansville.
