1998: Senior Season
Matt Schuldt joined the Nebraska pitching staff with one year of eligibility left, after playing for Howard Junior College and Baylor. Schuldt appeared in 10 games with seven starts, tossing two complete games. He owned a 3.13 ERA, which ranked third among Big 12 pitchers. Schuldt pitched 54.2 innings, giving up 44 hits and 24 runs, including 19 earned runs. He picked up wins against Hawaii, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. With his success against Big 12 opponents, Schuldt earned honorable-mention All-Big 12 accolades in 1998. A standout in the classroom, Schuldt earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, while claiming first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VII accolades. He was also a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection.
1997: Baylor
Schuldt pitched seven games for the Bears in 1997. He finished the year with five innings pitched, allowing 12 hits, 12 runs and seven walks, while striking out three. He pitched against NU during the Bears' 12-3 win in Lincoln on March 9. Pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits. It was his lone Big 12 appearance.
At Howard Junior College:
An all-conference hitter at the Big Springs, Texas, school in 1995, Schuldt also carried a 4.0 GPA his final semester and had a two-year cumulative average of 3.67. He switched from catcher to relief pitcher at Howard.
High School:
Schuldt was Washington High School's most valuable player twice in baseball and three times on the track team as a discus thrower.
Personal:
Parents are Sharon and Mike. Matt has two sisters, Jennifer and Kristina and a brother, Chad. He was drafted three times, in 1994, as a catcher by the San Francisco Giants in the 42nd round; in 1995, as a catcher by the Giants again in the 35th round; and in 1996, as a pitcher by the Detroit Tigers in the 27th round.
