After an impressive freshman season, Darin Petersen earned Mizuno/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America first-team honors while starting 53 games at shortstop. He ranked fourth on the team with a .329 batting average while notching 54 hits, 32 RBIs and seven doubles.

In his sophomore campaign, Petersen batted .320 and racked up 71 hits, 51 runs scored and 34 RBIs. His performance on the field earned him honorable mention All-Big Eight honors, while his work in the classroom garnered Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight and Academic All-District VII honors. Petersen started off the season with a five-RBI game against Peru State and had three games during the season where he tallied four hits. Petersen played even better down the stretch, hitting safely in 27 of the last 32 games.

Petersen started all 60 games at shortstop in his third year as a Husker. He ranked fourth on the team with a batting average of .263 and knocked in 18 runs. His seven sacrifices on the season led the squad and was third on the team with 217 at bats. Petersen was again selected to the Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight first-team.

Petersen was a staple in the Husker lineup, starting all 56 games he played in. In 233 at bats, Petersen batted .275 with 64 hits, 53 runs scored and 27 RBIs. He was able to draw 39 walks on the season, ranking him third on the team. Petersen was one of the top performers in the Hampton Inn/Sahara Desert Classic, getting named to the All-Tournament team along with three other Huskers. Petersen also earned second-team All-Big Eight, GTE Academic All-District VII, and first-team Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honors.
