Jed Dalton, a native of Papillion, Neb., spent four years playing baseball for the Huskers. He started 46 of 48 games as a freshman outfielder and led the Huskers with 10 sacrifice bunts, while his .358 average was third on team. In Big Eight play, Dalton hit .338 and finished as a conference co-leader with 27 hits and 17 runs in league games. His play on the field was rewarded with second-team Baseball America Freshman All-America honors.

As a sophomore in 1993, Dalton battled through a shoulder injury and only played in 36 games. He finished the season with a .339 batting average and 13 stolen bases while not committing an error the entire season. Dalton earned a selection to the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic All-Tournament Team after batting .429 in the six-game tournament.

Dalton started 59 of the Huskers' 60 games in 1994 and was able to secure honorable mention All-Big Eight and Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honors. Dalton finished with a .263 batting average that was fourth-best on the team, but hit .517 as a lead-off hitter. After stealing only 19 bases in his first two seasons, Dalton finished the year with 30 stolen bases. He was able to steal three bases against Kansas State on Apr. 15 and Iowa State on May 14. Dalton also notched a team-high five triples and ranked third on the team with 48 runs scored. His best game of the season came against Oral Roberts on Apr. 9 when he went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.   

In his senior campaign, Dalton turned in a career year for the Huskers on his way to second-team All-Big Eight honors. He batted .337 on the year and finished with career-highs in runs scored (75), RBIs (46), hits (89), doubles (22), total bases (138), and walks drawn (37). He also led the team with 264 at bats, which was the most in a single season by any Husker. Dalton's 14-game hitting streak was second-best on the team, while his 28 multiple-hit games ranked third on the squad. He graduated as the Huskers' all-time leader with a career total of 47 doubles.
