2006 Outlook: Freshman infielder Andrew Gudmunson comes to NU after a decorated high school career ? Was a four-time all-state pick at Minot (N.D.) High School, the same program that produced Huskers Phil and Charlie Shirek ? Has prototypical size (6-5, 200 pounds) and strength for a corner infielder and creates good leverage at the plate ? Will provide depth at first base this season, but has the natural talent and the work ethic to become a major contributor to the program in the near future.

Minot High School: Gudmunson was one of the top players in the upper Midwest playing for Coach Pete Stenberg at Minot High School ? Earned all-state honors all four years in high school, and was the captain of the North Dakota All-State team in both 2004 and 2005 ? Was a two-way standout in helping Minot to a 37-2 record and a state title, hitting .467 with five homers and 48 RBIs, while going 6-1 with a 1.17 ERA on the mound ? Batted .327 with five homers, 15 doubles, 32 RBIs and six stolen bases in 2004, while going 8-1 on the mound with a 1.21 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 58 innings ? Played American Legion ball for coach Todd Larson, leading the Minot Vistas to a 48-12 record and four regional championships during his career ? Hit .434 with seven homers, 50 RBIs, 17 doubles and seven triples while also going 5-1 with a 1.47 ERA on the mound in 2005 ? Lettered five times on the diamond, starting as an eighth grader while also lettering three times in both football and basketball ? Guided his team to a state playoff appearance as a senior en route to first-team all-state honors ? Named to the academic all-conference team on five occasions and was selected as the school’s top athlete in 2004-05 ? Looked at Minnesota, Kansas State, West Virginia and several junior colleges before selecting Nebraska.
