1991 (Senior)
Wiegert was a versatile and important cog in the offensive line that paved the way for Nebraska's 1991 Big Eight Championship. Wiegert started the first three games of the 1991 season at left tackle before moving to left guard and starting the rest of the season there. A Coaches' All-Big Eight pick, Wiegert helped Nebraska win yet another rushing title in 1991, its seventh in 12 years as the Huskers gained 353.2 yards per game. The Huskers also led the Big Eight and ranked third nationally in both total offense (506.45 yards per game) and scoring offense (41.3 points per game), while passing for more yards per game (153.3) than any season since 1978.
1990 (Junior)
Wiegert started four of the first five games of the season at right guard, but missed the Missouri game due to a jammed neck, then switched to left guards for the final five games and played as the alternate behind senior Jim Wanek. Wiegert's blocking helped Nebraska lead the Big Eight in rushing yards (340.0 per game), total yards (444.4 per game) and points (37.5 per game).
1989 (Sophomore)
Despite being listed as a backup right guard for most of the season, Wiegert started two games at right tackle while All-American Doug Glaser was sidelined by a broken big toe. He played in 10 game, plus the Fiesta Bowl vs. Florida State, and helped the Huskers lead the nation in rushing for the sixth time in the 1980s at 375.3 yards per game.

A scholarship recruit, Wiegert started at left tackle for Coach Shane Thorell's junior varsity team.
At Fremont Bergan HS
Erik was an all-class, all-state defensive end as a senior 1986 when he led Coach Joe Vojtech's team to a 10-2 record and a spot in the semifinals of the Class C-1 state playoffs. Later, he led Bergan to the Class C-1 state basketball title. He recorded 122 total tackles as a senior, including 68 unassisted and 17 for loss, while breaking up two passes and recovering two opponents' fumbles. He received the "Gold Hatchet" award as Bergan's top defensive player.
Personal
The son of Hedy Wiegert, Erik was born May 6, 1969, at Fremont, Neb. His brother, Zach, was the 1994 Outland Trophy winner at Nebraska and a fellow member of the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. The Wiegerts were the second pair of brothers to serve as captains for Husker football, following in the footsteps of Mike and Andy Keeler.
