Lincoln, Neb.- Nebraska men’s gymnastics head coach Chuck Chmelka announced Max Odden and Chase Mondi as the team captains for the 2026-2027 season.
“I am excited to announce that our co-captains for the 2027 season are Max Odden and Chase Mondi,” head coach Chmelka said. “Both are great student-athletes, and they lead by example in the gym, in the classroom, and in life skills and will be great mentors for our young team.”
This will be Odden’s second time serving as a team captain after leading the team to a second-place finish at the 2026 Big Ten Championships and a fourth-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Odden, a senior from Arizona, is a two-time All-American after finishing eighth on high bar and second in the all-around at the 2026 NCAA Championships. His second-place all-around finish gave him a career-high score of 78.698. He also received a silver medal in the all-around at the 2026 Big Ten Championships. During his career as a Husker, Odden has won four individual titles, all on high bar, and has competed for Nebraska at the NCAA Championships every year he has been on the team. He was awarded CGA Gymnast of the Week during the 2026 season and was honored as Big Ten Freshman of the Week during his first season on the team.
This will be Mondi’s first season serving as team captain. Mondi is a two-time All-American after finishing in the top eight on floor during both the 2025 and 2026 seasons at the NCAA Championships. He has competed at the NCAA Championships representing the Huskers every season since his freshman year. Mondi has won eight individual titles, with four on floor and four on vault. He was awarded CGA Freshman of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week during the 2024 season. He was also selected as Big Ten Specialist of the Week during the 2026 season. Outside of the gym, Mondi is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, the 2026 Nebraska Sam Foltz Hero Leadership Award winner, a 2026 CSC Academic All-District member and a 2026 First Team recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
The 2027 roster has 13 underclassmen, and five of those are freshmen. Odden and Mondi are ready to lead the young team to success. They hope to build on the momentum they had during the 2026 season to lead the team back to the NCAA Championship finals.
