Once again, the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers came out victorious as the top football team in the last 140 years in a Sporting News Poll released this week.
The Huskers, who went 12-0 under Hall of Fame Coach Tom Osborne, claimed the top spot by a 20-member media panel of Sporting News writers and other college football broadcasters as part of the publication’s 140th anniversary.
The 1995 Huskers were one of the dominant teams in college football history, winning all 12 of their games by at least 14 points, culminating the season with a historic 62-24 rout of No. 2 Florida in the Fiesta Bowl for a second straight national title. Led by Heisman runner-up Tommie Frazier, the Cornhuskers ranked No. 1 in the nation in both rushing (399.8) and scoring (52.4) and No. 2 in total offense (556.3). The Huskers scored 49 or more points seven times, including four games with at least 60 points.
Nebraska defeated four teams that finished in the top-10 of the final AP poll, including No. 2 Florida, No. 5 Colorado, No. 7 Kansas State and No. 9 Kansas.
Of the 20 voters, the 1995 Huskers were the only team on all 20 ballots and claimed seven first-place votes.a
