Sophomore closer J’Shawn Unger has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, the organization announced Wednesday. The award is given to the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball each season.
Unger is one of seven Big Ten pitchers on the 57-player list, joining Devin Bell (Oregon), Gavin DeVooght (Michigan), Easton Hawk (UCLA), Brandon Jaenke (Minnesota), Jake Kramer (Purdue) and Adam Troy (USC).
The right-hander is tied for 13th in the country with eight saves on the season and holds a 5-1 record with a 3.29 ERA in 16 relief appearances.
Unger has struck out 29 opposing batters across 27.1 innings of work and is limiting opponents to a .158 batting average on the year.
