AVONDALE, Ariz. - The Nebraska beach volleyball team posted three wins on Thursday at the Avondale Beach Volleyball Complex.
Nebraska beat Mesa CC (4-1), Benedictine Mesa (5-0) and Ottawa (AZ) (3-2), the No. 1-ranked NAIA team and defending national champion who was 11-0 entering the match. The Huskers improved to 7-0 on the season.
In the first match against Mesa CC, Olivia Mauch and Manaia Ogbechie got things started at No. 4, cruising past Regan McFarland and Isabella Jackson 21-10, 21-11. Skyler Pierce and Laney Choboy followed at No. 3, beating Paige Thompson and Arys Palmer 21-13, 21-14.
Mesa CC picked up its lone point at No. 2, where Brianna Anderson and Marley Avechuco defeated Harper Murray and Andi Jackson 21-15, 21-16.
Bergen Reilly and Teraya Sigler took care of business at the top of the lineup, handling Isa Folau and Emma Hildwine 21-12, 21-17. Keri Leimbach and Jayden Robinson closed out the victory at No. 5, holding off Infinity Jutting and Karma James 23-21, 21-16.
In the second match against Benedictine Mesa, Mauch and Ogbechie got NU on the board at No. 4, beating Ella Burton and Janae Moore 21-14, 21-9. Leimbach and Robinson followed at No. 5, handling Haley Azzoz and Isabella Garey 21-16, 21-16.
Pierce and Choboy won at No. 3 over Daisy Motes and Izabella Duchaine 21-10, 21-12. Murray and Jackson clinched the sweep at No. 2 in three sets, dropping the first before rebounding to win 19-21, 21-12, 15-9. Reilly and Sigler closed out the sweep at the top of the lineup, holding off Taylor Erickson and Sophie Drollinger in a tight second set to win 21-16, 25-23.
Nebraska finished the day with a 3-2 win over host OUAZ. Once again, Mauch and Ogbechie got things started at No. 4, battling past Katy Shockey and Alicia Romero in three sets, 21-19, 18-21, 15-6. Pierce and Choboy followed at No. 3, handling Shayna Martinez and Railey Dykstra 21-17, 21-13 to put NU up 2-0.
OUAZ answered at No. 2, where Olga Romero and Shea Marovich rallied past Murray and Jackson in three sets, 14-21, 21-19, 15-11. But Reilly and Sigler clinched the victory at No. 1, beating Eliana Dean and Maya Blake 21-12, 21-15. Marielle Ramos and Gabriela Corrales closed out the match for OUAZ at No. 5, topping Leimbach and Robinson 20-22, 21-17, 15-11.
NU will take part in the Sun Devil Classic on Friday and Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. The Huskers play on Friday at Noon (CT) against Southern Miss and at 2 p.m. (CT) against Arizona State at the Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility.
