Greensboro, N.C. - The No. 6 Nebraska Bowling team remained perfect through day two of the Stallings Invitational, staying in second place with a 10-0 record, going 5-0 in traditional matches on Saturday. Their total pinfall after two days of competition is 10,148 with a 203.0 average.
Three Huskers finished in the top-15 overall, led by Jillian Martin in 9th with a 1,001 pinfall and 200.2 average, Karina Capron placed 10th after notching a 999 pinfall and 199.9 average while Haley Swindle is in 11th recording a 996 pinfall and 199.2 average. The day marked Martin’s fifth top-10 finish of the year and Capron’s first, while Swindle recorded her fourth top-15 finish of the campaign.
For the day’s first match against No. 12 North Carolina A&T, the Huskers elected to start Desiree Buchert, Kayla Starr, Swindle, Capron and Martin. The Big Red initially trailed the Aggies, but consistent spares allowed NU to take a lead after the sixth frame. The match remained close until the final frame where turkeys from Martin (237), Swindle (204) and Capron (188) secured the 966-931 victory for the Huskers. Buchert (172) and Starr (165) rounded out the lineup with solid performances.
The Big Red’s second opponent was No. 16 Mount St. Mary’s. Despite another slow start, NU claimed another victory, 982-921. The Huskers were led by Martin with 214, followed by Swindle 198. Buchert and Starr both shot 195, while Capron added 180.
The third match pitted Nebraska against No. 24 Bryant. The Huskers substituted Starr for Lani Breedlove to start the match. Open frames were a struggle for the Scarlet and Cream, keeping the match close throughout. Mistakes from the Bulldogs allowed NU to pull in front and win the match 1,006-897. Swindle (220) and Breedlove (219) shined while Capron and Martin shot 194 and 191, respectively. Buchert tacked on 182 to complete the game.
In the fourth match, the Huskers faced Coppin State. The Eagles kept it close in the first four frames, but the Big Red pulled away to a 960-819 win. Swindle (204) and Capron (203) led NU, then Breedlove with 190, with Buchert and Martin contributing 184 and 179, respectively.
The finale featured action between the Big Red and Maryland Eastern Shore. At the start of the match, Brenna Hartzler was slotted into the lineup in place of Buchert, then moved to the two-hole, making Breedlove the first bowler. The Huskers held the lead from the beginning, bolstered by a six-pack from Capron. With a 968-876 final score, NU remained perfect through day two for the first time this season.
Action resumes tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. when the Huskers take on No. 1 Jacksonville State in a best-4-of-7 baker match for a chance to play for the tournament title.
