Huskers Falter vs. K-State

Nebraska fell 5-3 in a matchup against Kansas State at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series on Saturday night at Globe Life Field.

Nebraska (3-3) scored three runs on six hits and an error, while Kansas State (5-1) totaled five runs, four hits and an error.

Mac Moyer led the Huskers at the plate with a 2-for-3 night. Joshua Overbeek doubled and drove in two runs, while Jeter Worthley and Case Sanderson each had a double.

Carson Jasa tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits with eight punchouts and four walks. J’Shawn Unger dropped to 0-1 on the season after surrendering a run on one hit and a strikeout.

Grant Cleavinger allowed a run on a walk without recording an out, while Kevin Mannell and Chase Olson each recorded a scoreless inning of relief.

The Husker offense threatened in the bottom of first innings with runners on first and third with no outs. Mac Moyer opened with a full-count walk and Jett Buck singled through the right side, but three consecutive strikeouts put an end to NU's threat.

K-State took advantage of a leadoff walk in the top of the second to open the scoring on Saturday night. A full-count walk and a stolen base had a runner on second for the Wildcats, while a one-out RBI single to center field later in the inning gave K-State a 1-0 lead.

Nebraska scored a pair of runs behind three hits in the bottom of the third to grab a 2-1 lead. Moyer reached on a one-out single, while Sanderson lifted a two-out double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third for the Big Red. Overbeek came through for the Huskers, smacking a two-RBI double into the gap in right-center field.

The Big Red capitalized on a K-State error in the bottom of the fifth to grow the lead to 3-1. Worthley led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, followed by a four-pitch walk to Moyer that put runners on first and second with no outs.

Sanderson reached on fielder’s choice, and an errant throw on a double-play attempt allowed Worthley to score from second base to give the Huskers a two-run advantage.

The Wildcats responded immediately with a pair of runs on one hit to even the score at three in the top of the sixth inning. K-State had the bases loaded after a leadoff walk and a pair of two-out walks. A two-RBI single through the right side locked the game at three through six innings.

The two teams exchanged scoreless sides in the seventh inning, while a two-run rally in the top eighth gave K-State a 5-3 lead. A single and a four-pitch walk, joined with a passed ball had runners on second and third with no outs. A sacrifice fly to left field broke the 3-3 tie and RBI single to left field tacked on another run for the Wildcats.

The Husker offense was retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings to clinch the 5-3 win for K-State.
