The Nebraska swimming and diving team travels to Iowa City, Iowa, in search of an invitational title at the annual mid-season Hawkeye Invite. The a four-day event runs from Tuesday, through Friday (Nov. 18-21).
The event kicks off with a single session Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center before Wednesday and Thursday feature a two-session format with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. On Friday, preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by the 1,650 freestyle competition at approximately 2:15 p.m., and the final events of the meet starting at 4 p.m.. The Hawkeye Invite can be streamed on Iowa's YouTube stream and followed along on MeetMobile for live results.
The nine-team competition features Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Miami, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, UConn and Washington State.
The Huskers have faced Iowa State and Kansas in dual action early this season, and are scheduled to face Illinois and Iowa in a double-dual in mid-January, but the invitational format will change the competition significantly, serving as excellent preparation for the Big Ten Championships in February.
Gena Jorgenson and Beatrix Tanko are coming off strong swims in a dual win over Kansas. Jorgenson, a senior from Aberdeen, S.D., owns the fastest 1,650 free time in the NCAA heading into the Hawkeye Invite after cruising to a 16:10.04 in the dual win over Kansas. She also matched the fourth-fastest time in Husker history in the 200 backstroke, logging a time of 1:57.23. She has qualified for the NCAA Championships twice in the 200 back.
Tanko, a junior from Hungary, swam the second-fastest time in NU history in the 100 fly (52.72) against the Jayhawks.
Newcomer Aurora Zanin contributed the seventh-fastest time in Nebraska history in the 200 fly (1:58.00) in the win over KU.
In the diving well, Abby Baxter, Kelsey Clairmont, Frankie Webb, and Addy Farman have all earned Zone D qualifying scores up to this point in the season. Farman, a freshman from Snohomish, Wash., racked a score of 280.58 against the Jayhawks on the three-meter board.
Hawkeye Invite History
Last season, the Huskers brought home the Hawkeye Invitational title by finishing with 1,368 points to win the nine-team meet. Gena Jorgenson captured individual titles in the 500 and 1,650 freestyles, while adding a third-place finish in the 200 back (1:58.60).
Maia Hall also stood out by sweeping individual titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
