Curtis Finishes Action at U20 EuroBasket

Nebraska freshman Leo Curtis nearly posted his second double-double in Iceland’s 63-56 loss to Germany Sunday at the U20 Eurobasket in Heraklion, Greece.

Curtis totaled 12 points, eight rebounds and a game-high six blocked shots in 37 minutes of action, as he posted his sixth double-figure effort in seven games of action.

Iceland led 42-38 after three quarters, but Germany outscored Iceland, 25-14, in the fourth quarter for the victory.  Curtis’ six blocked shots marked the second time in the tournament that he totaled six blocked shots.

Curtis, a 7-foot-1 forward, finished the tournament leading all players in blocked shots (2.7 per game) and in the top two in both rebounding (8.1 rpg, second), and minutes played (31.6, second).  He topped Iceland in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounding, blocked shots and minutes played while also finishing second on the team with 2.9 assists per game.

Curtis will return to Lincoln later this week to rejoin the Huskers for the final portion of summer workouts.


Curtis Scores 22 as Iceland Picks Up Second Tournament Win
Husker freshman Leo Curtis posted his second 20-point game of the week, lifting Iceland to an 88-67 win over the Ukraine Saturday morning at the U20 EuroBasket Championships in Heraklion, Greece.

Curtis finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots as Iceland improved to 2-4 during tournament play. Iceland will play Germany in its final game of the tournament Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

The 7-foot-1 forward has five of his points and a block as Iceland in a game-opening 19-0 run over the first 5:36 of the contest. In all, Curtis totaled nine points, two rebounds and a block in the first quarter alone, helping Iceland to a commanding 29-6 advantage.

Iceland built a 58-27 halftime lead as Curtis tallied 17 of his 22 points in the first half. Iceland led by as much as 36 in cruising to its second tournament win.

Entering the final day of tournament play, Curtis is averaging 15.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 blocks per game. He leads Iceland in scoring, rebounding and blocks and is second in assists.

Leo Curtis continued action at the U20 EuroBasket in Greece on Thursday, as Iceland fell to Romania, 72-57. Curtis finished with nine points, six rebounds and three assists, the first time in five tournament games he was held out of double figures.

Curtis is now averaging 13.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists and 2.2 blocks per game entering the final two rounds of competition. Iceland will be in action Saturday morning taking on the Ukraine. Tipoff is set for 5 a.m. (CT)

Despite 11 points and seven rebounds from Leo Curtis, Iceland fell to Italy in the Round of 16 of the U20 EuroBasket Championship on Wednesday.

Italy took control of the game in the second quarter, out-scoring Iceland, 31-11, to take a 22-point halftime lead and was in control for most of the contest.

Curtis was the only Iceland player to finish in double figures, as Curtis finished with 11 points in 24 minutes along with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

For the tournament, Curtis is averaging 14.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 3.5 apg, and 2.5 bpg, as he is among the tournament leaders in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.


Behind a double-double from Curtis, Iceland closed group play with a 78-76 win over Slovenia Monday morning at U20 EuroBasket in Greece.

Curtis finished with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, along with 11 rebounds, six blocked shots and four assists in 37 minutes as Iceland built a 14-point second-half lead and held on for its first win in Pool D.  With the win, Iceland finishes third in its pool heading into the Round of 16 matchup with Italy on Wednesday. Through three games, Curtis is averaging 16.0 ppg on 50 percent shooting along with 9.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.7 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. He leads Iceland in scoring, rebounding, blocks and is tied for the team lead in steals.

 

 


Curtis nearly posted a double-double in Iceland's loss to France on Sunday, as he tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists. After two games, he is averaging 14.0 ppg on 48 percent shooting, including 36 percent from 3-poinr range, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, ranking among the top 20  in the tournament in in scoring (17th), rebounding (ninth) and assists (20th). 


Curtis opened tournament play with a strong effort in Iceland's loss to Serbia Saturday morning, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, nine rebounds and five assists. Curtis hit 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and also added three steals and a blocked shot in 33 minutes of work.

Pool place takes place July 12-14, with the Round of 16 starting on July 16. Teams are seeded for the Round of 16 stage based on their group position. The competition will continue in the form of a bracket until the Final on July 20, with Classification Games also determining each of the 16 positions.

Curtis, a 7-foot-1, 220-pound forward from Reykjavik, Iceland, is representing his national team for the third straight summer. He previously played in the 2024 U20 EuroBasket and the 2023 U18 EuroBasket events. He spent most of June with the Huskers before heading to Iceland to train in preparation for the event.

Curtis came to the U.S. last season and played at CATS (Mass.) Academy, where he averaged 12.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.1 assists per game. He helped the school to a 28-7 record, a runner-up finish in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AA tournament and a No. 5 national ranking. For his efforts, he was a first-team All-NEPSAC Class AA honoree.
