Nebraska Football Road Race Set for Next Sunday

Written byShamus McKnight

We are just over a week away from the 13th annual Nebraska Football Road Race presented by Home Agency with support from The Lincoln Track Club.  The Road Race takes place on Sunday, July 20, at Memorial Stadium with a one-mile Fun Run starting at 8 a.m. while the 5K run will start at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Fans can register for either race by visiting https://huskers.com/roadrace with rates set at $35 (1-mile Fun Run) and $45 (5K). Participants who sign up by July 16, at 6 p.m., will receive a discounted rate of $25 for the one-mile Fun Run and $35 for the 5K.

In person registration on race day is also available with prices set at $45 (1-mile Fun Run) and $55 (5K).  All runners will also receive a commemorative race-day t-shirt and Nebraska Football Road Race Bracelet while all proceeds will go directly to pediatric brain cancer research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

“I would encourage everyone to sign up for the road race because it’s a great event,” said senior defensive back Derek Branch. “It is an opportunity to get around the Huskers before the season, to be in Memorial Stadium and get to run across the goal line like Jack (Hoffman) got to do back in the day.  The money is going directly to UMNC to fund pediatric brain cancer research. It is huge for the kids in Nebraska that are struggling with this because it helps to cut down the need to travel and spend on that during such a hard time. I can’t think a much better ways to come spend a Sunday and encourage Husker fans to join us to raise money for a great cause.”

The history of the Nebraska Football Road Race is directly tied to the inspirational friendship between former Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead and pediatric brain cancer patient Jack Hoffman, who became famous as a 7-year-old by running for a 69-yard touchdown in the 2013 Spring Game.

Because of this relationship, the Nebraska football team has been committed to raising awareness and funds for pediatric brain cancer research. More than $300,000 has been raised in the history of the event and the football team along with many Husker alums have played a pivotal role in the Team Jack Foundation raising nearly $13 million dollars to find a cure for pediatric brain cancer.

Participants in the 1-mile fun run will have a chance to run with some of the Husker football players who will be at the event.  Registrants will have opportunities to interact with the members of the Nebraska football team during the event.

All participating runners will get to run 69 yards on Tom Osborne Field much like Jack did. Both the 1-mile and 5K races will start and finish in Memorial Stadium being cheered on by the Husker Football team and student-athletes from multiple other Husker teams.
