Huskers Battle with Ranked Upsets, Fall 4-3 at #18 Huskies

Despite keeping the individually ranked Huskies to an 0-2 day, the No. 73 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell just short on the road Friday afternoon, dropping its match 4-3. No. 18 Washington (18-3, 10-2 Big Ten) dropped only its fifth doubles point of the season, but managed four key singles victories to best the Huskers (12-11, 2-10 Big Ten).

The Big Ten matchup at Washington began with doubles in Seattle. Seniors Lucy Loy and Ana Zamburek started off the action with a dominant upset on Court One. The Huskers took down No. 52 Carter/Jacobs, 6-2. Yuzu Miyoshi and Natalia Trigosso battled at No. 3 doubles, but fell 6-4 to Syrtveit/Koenig. For the doubles point, Emma Rizzetto and Reya Lee Coe pulled off a tiebreaker win, 7-6(5), against Matsuda/Luescher on Court Two.

Leading 1-0 early, two Huskers took their first sets. Zamburek delivered for her second ranked upset win of the day, defeating No. 94 Carter 6-4, 6-4, on Court One. On Court Six, Yuzu Miyoshi lost 7-5, 6-3 against Syrtveit. Reya Lee Coe fell to Koenig, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, evening the team score at 2-2.

Loy finished next, winning 6-4, 7-6(2), on Court Five against Luescher. Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini forced third sets in their respective No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches, but both came up short. The Huskers fell in the conference dual, falling to 12-10 on the season (2-10 Big Ten).

Zamburek was part of two major ranked upset wins, claiming her season’s 16th singles victory and 10th for doubles. The senior doubles duo took out #52 Carter/Jacobs, handing the Huskies pair only their fifth loss of the season, and notching the Huskers’ second ranked win. The all-time series between NU and UW is now tied, 1-1. Nebraska looks to break its four-match losing streak on Sunday, coming off three duals against top-25 teams.
