Huskers Clipped by Iowa in Pitchers' Duel

A solo homer in the second inning was the difference of Friday’s series opener, as the Huskers suffered a 1-0 setback at Iowa on Friday night at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

Nebraska (15-19, 4-9 Big Ten) recorded three hits, while Iowa (22-10, 13-3 Big Ten) totaled one run, three hits and an error.

Cayden Brumbaugh was 1-for-3 with a double, while Riley Silva and Gabe Swansen each had a single.

Will Walsh fell to 4-5 on the season after dealing seven two-hit innings. The redshirt senior struck out four and walked one while allowing just one baserunner to reach second base on the night. Drew Christo pitched a scoreless eighth inning, working around a two-out single.

Iowa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second with a two-out solo homer over the videoboard in left field.

The Huskers threatened in the top of the third with a pair of baserunners after a one-out single by Silva and full-count walk to Brumbaugh had runners on first and second.

Nebraska had one baserunner reach third all night when Brumbaugh laced a one-out double and advanced to third in the top of the eighth. The next two Huskers were sat down on strikeouts to strand the tying run at third base.

The Huskers were retired in order in the top of the ninth to clinch Iowa’s 1-0 win on Friday night.

Nebraska and Iowa continue the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:02 p.m. at Duane Banks Field on B1G+.
