Christo, Brockett Tame Huskies on Sunday

Jackson Brockett and Drew Christo allowed just one run in 7.2 combined innings, as the Huskers recorded a 6-2 win vs. Washington in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (5-8, 1-2 Big Ten) scored six runs on 11 hits and two errors, while Washington (7-9, 2-1 Big Ten) totaled two runs, 10 hits and three errors.

Cayden Brumbaugh went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Case Sanderson drove in two runs while going 2-for-4 with a double. Rhett Stokes had a 2-for-4 afternoon, while Dylan Carey was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Devin Nunez homered for the third time this season, while Will Jesske and Joshua Overbeek each had a single.

Brockett pitched 4.2 shutout innings in the start, allowing just five hits and striking out four with a pair of walks. Christo improved to 1-1 on the year after allowing one run on three hits across three innings in relief. The senior right-hander recorded a season-high six punchouts on Sunday afternoon.

Luke Broderick picked up his second save of the season, surrendering one run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Gabe Swansen reached on a one-out error, followed by Overbeek’s single to left field had runners on first and second in the bottom of the second inning. Sanderson broke the scoreless tie, drilling a 1-1 pitch through the right side for an RBI single to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.

Washington loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with no hits after a walk, NU throwing error and a plunked batter had the bases loaded with two outs. Christo replaced Brockett on the mound and avoided any damage, inducing a swinging strikeout to maintain the Big Red’s 1-0 lead.

Brumbaugh was plunked, followed by Frost reaching on a throwing error that had runners on second and third with one out for the Husker offense in the bottom of the fifth. Carey wasted no time adding on to the Huskers’ lead, drilling a first-pitch, 386-foot three-run homer in the left-center berm to give Nebraska a 4-0 lead through five innings.

Christo retired the Huskies in order in the sixth and seventh innings to send a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning. Back-to-back singles and a one-out RBI single plated Washington’s first run of the afternoon. The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs after a walk, but Broderick induced a flyout to left field to keep it a three-run game.

Nunez began the bottom of the eighth with a 397-foot solo shot to right field, extending the Huskers’ lead to 5-1. Stokes followed the homer with a single to left, before coming around to score on Sanderson’s RBI double into the left-center alley.

A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly allowed Washington to score its second run of the afternoon in the top of the ninth inning, while Broderick’s game-ending strikeouts sealed Nebraska’s 6-2 win over the Huskies on Sunday.

Nebraska continues play at home with a pair of midweek contests against Wichita State on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 11-12 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. First pitch between the Huskers and Shockers is scheduled for 6:02 p.m. on B1G+.
