Huskers Partner with American Red Cross for Community Blood Drive on March 28

Lincoln, NE -- Nebraska Athletics and Husker student athletes will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, March 28th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the West Stadium Club of Memorial Stadium.

In 2023, Nebraska Basketball student-athlete Sam Griesel approached the athletic department in hopes of hosting a drive following his need for a blood transfusion in 2021. The first annual event was a success, bringing in 72 total units of blood.

This year’s drive is led by the Husker Healers, an organization for student-athletes interested in pursuing careers in the medical field, and donors attending will have the chance to meet Husker student-athletes from a variety of sports.

“Husker Healers is honored to be helping with the Nebraska Athletics/Red Cross Blood Drive,” Nebraska Swim and Dive Athlete and Husker Healers President Caitlyn Cairnes said. “As student-athletes hoping to pursue careers in health care, we all know how important donating blood is, and we are so excited to be giving back to our community in such a meaningful way.”

Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. According to the Red Cross, with someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative.
