Big Ten Life Series: Agricultural Experience

Nebraska’s Coordinator of Strategic Initiatives Mya Felder traveled to Coralville, Iowa, for the Big Ten Life Series Agricultural Experience, Jul. 25-27. Felder and other Big Ten Representatives visited Kroul Farm, where they learned about the business and process of farming.

“We truly got to see all sides of the farming business and experience some of the activities and responsibilities they have on a daily basis,” Felder said.

The week began with dinner on Tuesday evening where student-athletes and staff had the opportunity to discuss the logistics of farming. The Western Family, owners of Western Family Farms, a historically black owned farm, along with Marcus Carpenter from Route 1 was able to enlighten the group on increasing food access and reducing barriers for people of color as well as what their legacy and business means to them.

"This was an educational and exciting experience for all student-athletes and staff that participated."

The group then traveled to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where they explored the farm owned by Matt Kroul, former New York Jets lineman. Student-athletes and staff had the opportunity to explore the farm while learning about environmental aspects with local USDA representatives, learn more about the business of farming and even had the chance to plant produce and flowers as well as collect eggs from the chickens.

“This trip has increased my perspective on food access and my understanding of the importance of the farm to table process,” Felder said.

The group concluded the trip with discussion at the Iowa Athletic Club.
