Huskers Add Korth, Scherwinski to Coaching Staff

Nebraska women’s gymnastics head coach Heather Brink has announced the hiring of new assistant coaches Mollie Korth and Sam Scherwinski.

Korth was an assistant coach for the Georgia Bulldogs during the 2024 season. With her help, the Bulldogs finished No. 18 in the final Road to Nationals poll and earned an NQS of 197.425. She worked with Georgia’s beam squad, which ended the season ranked No. 17 nationally, and the floor lineup, which finished at No. 23 nationally. Her 2024 beam lineup, mostly made up of freshmen, notched an impressive 49.450 during the second round of the NCAA Championships. She will coach and help choreograph routines for Nebraska’s beam and floor rotations.

“Mollie brings valuable depth to our team, including her background as an NCAA gymnast and most recently, spending the past few years coaching at multiple levels of schools,” Brink said. “I have no doubt her hard work, unwavering commitment and understanding of the process and ability to connect with the athletes will undoubtedly enhance our staff.”

Before her stint as an assistant coach, Korth was a volunteer assistant for the Bulldogs, and was a volunteer assistant for Pitt for a year. As an athlete, Korth competed at Kentucky, where she was the third Wildcat ever to be named All-SEC in four consecutive seasons. The Cambridge, Wis., native was the 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year. She was a three-time WCGA All-American and was one of six finalists for the AAI award during her senior year. In total, she was an 11-time All-American.

Scherwinski previously coached at Lindenwood, where transfers Reese Baechle and Nya Kraus come from. There, he served as the lead coach on uneven bars and structured the Lions’ in-gym strength and conditioning. He will head up the vault and floor lineups at Nebraska.

“Sam joins us after having helped lead his previous team to a USAG Collegiate National Championship,” Brink said. “I look for his experiences, genuine passion for the sport, and his drive for success, to make an immediate impact on our team.”

For his success at Lindenwood, Scherwinski was named the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year, along with the MIC Assistant Coach of the Year. Under his tutelage, the Lions won the MIC Championship and the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship. Two of his athletes won conference titles on uneven bars and in the all-around, and in its final year of existence, the team broke six all-time program records. Scherwinski also helped Lindenwood athletes to 14 USAG All-America honors.

In 2023, Scherwinski coached the Lions to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship, where two athletes won individual titles. Lindenwood gymnasts also earned 16 MIC All-Conference honors.

Scherwinski also coached at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where athletes earned numerous top finishes in the WIAC Conference and D3 National Championship. As an athlete, the Green Bay, Wis., native was a competitive Level 10 gymnast. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in May 2021 and his master’s degree in Sport Coaching from West Virginia University in December 2022.

“I know both Mollie and Sam are thrilled about this opportunity and excited to get to work,” Brink said. “I look forward to welcoming them to the Husker Family and look forward to working alongside them.”
