Marshall Leads Huskers in Big Ten Opening Round

Will Marshall carded a 73 to lead Nebraska in the opening round of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship presented by Old National Bank in Columbus, Ohio on Friday.

Marshall, a fifth-year senior from Elburn, Ill., notched birdies on No. 4 and No. 13 to go along with 11 pars and five bogeys on the par-70, 7,240-yard layout of the Scioto Country Club. He enters Saturday's second round in a tie for 23rd place in the 70-player field.

Sophomore Davis Johnson (Chaska, Minn.) put up Nebraska's second-best score of the first round with a 75 (+5) to sit in a tie for 40th, while senior Gentry Scheve (Emporia, Kan.) and junior Hamish Murray (Sydney, Australia) added rounds of 76 (+6) to NU's five-count-four team total.

As a team, Nebraska ended the day at 300 (+20) in 12th place ahead of Michigan (305) and Maryland (307).

Northwestern put together an even-par 280 to take a six-shot lead over second-place Michigan State at 286 (+6). Purdue sits alone in third at 288 (+8), while Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin are tied for fourth at 290 (+10) just 10 shots ahead of the Huskers with 36 holes to play at the championship.

Michigan State's August Meekhof produced the best round of the day with a 67 (-3). He carries a one-shot lead over Northwestern's Daniel Svard and James Imai, who both ended the round at 68 (-2).

Saturday's second round will get underway with tee times at 8 a.m., with live scoring available on Huskers.com from GolfStat.
