Big Red Wealth Series Continues with 1st Year Huskers

The Nebraska Life Skills team continues to show its support to student athletes and their continued education on managing personal finances. On Monday, February 5th, Life Skills hosted the third edition of the Big Red Wealth Series, a seminar targeted on budgeting and building credit for 1st year student-athletes. The Big Red Wealth Series is part of the annual 4-year tiered events and educates student-athletes on money management and responsible financial decisions

Monday’s seminar in the West Stadium Club was required for all 1st year Husker student-athletes and led by Lincoln Center Director for the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, Lindsay Tillinghast. Tillinghast has partnered with the Life Skills staff on developing the Big Red Wealth series and the continued efforts of education on finances for student athletes at Nebraska.

Student athletes learned about credit, budgeting, and allocating finances through light hearted games to get attendees on their feet and engaged with financial resources. Using beans to represent finances, student athletes sorted the beans into necessary insurance, food, savings, and other expenses to practice the equal distribution of funds and budgeting. In addition, Tillinghast provided scenarios that student-athletes worked through to learn about how different financial decisions impact their credit.

The Big Red Wealth Series will continue with the next seminar on March 18th for second year student-athletes and will focus on understanding taxes. For questions about the Big Red Wealth Series, please reach out to Assistant Director of Life Skills/PEO Director, Tom Lemke.
