Huskers to Host Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday

Nebraska track and field hosts its final home meet of the season on Friday with the Nebraska Tune-Up beginning at 12 p.m. (CT) at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

The meet will give athletes an opportunity to improve marks ahead of next week’s Big Ten Indoor Championships, Feb. 23-24.

NCAA Leaders

Huskers in the Polls
Nebraska men's track and field is ranked ninth in the fourth week of the USTFCCCA rankings after competing at the prestigious Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Husker men have posted six marks that currently rank inside the top-15 nationally, while adding four all-time marks this season.

After his first time competing in the heptathlon this season at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, Till Steinforth jumped to No. 2 in the NCAA with 6,097 points. Henry Zimmerman broke the weight throw school record for the fourth time this season on Feb. 9 at the Tyson Invitational, posting a 75-2 (22.91m) to rank fourth nationally. Kevin Shubert moved to No. 4 in the country and No. 8 all-time in the shot put with a mark of 65-3 1/4 (19.89m). Darius Luff is tied for sixth in the 60m hurdles after his 7.65 in the Tyson Invitational prelims. Terrol Wilson leads NU in the triple jump rankings, tied for 10th after posting a PR 52-6 (16.00m) at the Tyson. Micaylon Moore adds a top-15 ranking, hitting 52-3 1/4 (15.93m) in the triple jump at the Mark Colligan Memorial.

In this week’s conference rankings, the Husker men came in at No. 2 and have six event squads ranked in the top 10 nationally, including weight throw and triple jump at No. 2, long jump at No. 7, high jump and 60m hurdles at No. 8 and shot put at No. 10.

On the women's side, Nebraska is ranked No. 2 in triple jump, No. 4 in shot put, No. 5 in long jump, No. 7 in high jump, and No. 9 in the weight throw.

Steinforth Claims Big Ten Weekly Award
Till Steinforth earned the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor on Feb. 7, announced by the conference office.

In his first time competing in the heptathlon this season, Steinforth topped the standings at the competitive Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational over the weekend with 6,097 points, ranking second in the NCAA. Entering Saturday, Steinforth had 3,452 points after winning the 60m (6.80) and long jump (25-0 3/4, 7.64m) portions on Friday. He added solid shot put (46-8 1/4, 14.23m) and high jump (6-6, 1.98m) marks to put him in good position entering the final day. Steinforth then won the 60m hurdles with a 7.99, placed fourth in the pole vault with a 15-11 (4.85) and ran to third in the 1000m with a PR time of 2:47.08 to secure first place and the Devaney Center record. 

Zimmerman Earns Second Big Ten Weekly Award
Henry Zimmerman was named the Big Ten Men’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 24 by the conference office.

For the second-consecutive week, Zimmerman was honored by the conference as a top performer with his record-breaking weight throw mark at the Mark Colligan Memorial.

A week after breaking Nebraska' s school record at the Graduate Classic, Zimmerman improved his personal-best weight throw mark to break his own record. He won the event at the Mark Colligan Memorial with a mark of 74-8 1/4 (22.76m), after hitting 73-6 3/4 (22.42m) the previous weekend. Since then, he's broken the school record two more times. His throw of 75-2 (22.91m) from the Tyson Invitational is currently No. 2 in the Big Ten and No. 4 in the NCAA.

Johansson Named to The Bowerman Preseason Watch List
Axelina Johansson was one of 10 track and field athletes nationally named to The Bowerman 2024 women's preseason watch list on Tuesday. The Bowerman, presented by the USTFCCCA, is the highest track and field accolade given annually to the most outstanding college male and female athletes. First awarded in 2009, watch lists have been released since 2010. 

A four-time All-American, Johansson claimed the 2023 Outdoor NCAA title and Indoor NCAA silver medal in the shot put. The junior from Hok, Sweden swept the Big Ten shot put titles last season, putting up a school record-breaking mark of 64-1 1/4 (19.54m) at the outdoor meet to earn the Big Ten Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year honor. Earlier in the season, Johansson topped the indoor school record book, throwing a 63-4 (19.30m) at the Frank Sevigne Invitational. Her best indoor and outdoor distances also broke the Swedish records.
