Huskers Wrap Up Day One in Texas

Houston, Texas - The Huskers completed day one of the 2023 Track Kat Klash going 3-2, tallying a total pinfall of 5,007 and currently sit in sixth place.

The Huskers began the three day tournament with a top-ten ranked match against No. 9 Maryville in a five-game-baker match. The Saints kept a steady lead through games 1-3, tallying scores of 203, 223 and 240. After a 191 score in Game One, the Huskers provided double 200’s in games two (214) and three (231) to keep the win within reach. A low 150 against the Saints 212 in game four would dig a hole too great for the Cornhuskers. Despite a 246 against Maryvilles 202 in game five, the deficit was too much, giving Maryville the first win of the day.

The Big Red then faced Alabama State in Match Two. A rough 126 from the Hornets allowed the Cornhuskers’ 186 to create a small cushion lead before both teams would shoot 165 in game two. ASU struggled to find its rhythm shooting 161 and 166 in games three and four. Nebraska continued the lead with a 196 and a massive 257 before sealing the win with a 208-188 in Game Five and a 1012-806 victory.

Nebraska was ready to continue the fire as it faced No. 19 Central Missouri. A close 195-191 total in Game One would give the Cornhuskers a four-pin lead before the Big Red would shoot a low 127 in game two. With a 217 in game two, the Jennies had closed the gap and taken the lead. Both teams would play close in games three (205-163) and four (225-189) with Nebraska trailing by 8 pins leading into the fifth game. A four bagger leading into the 10th frame would allow Husker anchor Jillian Martin to seal the win for the Huskers in game five (194-185) for a close 946-942 win.

The Cornhuskers felt good heading into match four against Grambling State. Despite a low 148, Grambling's 136 gave Nebraska the first lead in game one. The Big Red settled into a groove shooting a (191-143), (201-125) and (204-162) in games two-four. The hole was too deep for Grambling as Nebraska sealed it's third win with a 173 in game five, for a 917-724 win.

Match five would include another top-ten matchup against the No. 10 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The Bulldogs came out strong with wins in games one (193-197) and two (232-279). Nebraska was able to chip away at the lead in game three (245-215) but would have more work to do after game four (217-257). Despite a win in game five, (213-199) the Big Red would fall 1100-1147 for their second loss of the day.

The action continues tomorrow for day two at 9:30 a.m. (CT) with five sets of traditional matches. The combined results from Friday and Saturday will determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket-play championship tournament. Each team will play three best-of-seven Baker matches to finalize overall tournament placements beginning at 8:20 a.m. (CT).
