Huskers In Second After Day One In Wisconsin

Kenosha, Wisconsin - The Huskers completed day one of the 2023 Motiv Lady Jack Classic, hosted by No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, going 4-1 and tallying a total pinfall of 5,190, currently sitting in second overall.  

The Huskers began the three day tournament against No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater in a five-game-baker match. The Warhawks

 kept a steady start through games one through three, with scores of, 208, 187, and 160. With a score of 177 in game one, the Big Red kept the win within reach with a score of 216 and 181 in games two, and three. The Warhawks finished the match with a score of 165 and 192 in games four and five. The Cornhuskers would seal the first win of the day in games four (257) and five (180) for an overall 1011-912 win. 

Nebraska moved on to their second match of the day against another top 25 foe, No. 22 Tulane. The Big Red started off with large margins in games one through three, with scores of 201, 233, and 186. Tulane had a consistent start with a 190, 181, and a 202 in games one through three. However, the Cornhuskers were showing up big, tallying a 232 and a 245 in games four and five. Tulane would try to answer back with a 202 and a 163 in the last two matches but the deficit was too great, giving the Big Red their second big win of the day, 1097-938. 

Feeling good after a double win, the Cornhuskers began match three of the day against a top ten opponent, No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, who’s last encounter at the 2023 Pittsburgh Regional ended in a Big Red win, 2-1.  Nebraska started off the match strong with a 179, 225, and 182 in games one through three. SFA began their third match of the day with a 159, 190, and a 228. The Big Red continued their lead with a 225 and a 233 in games four through five, securing their third win of the day. Despite scores of 212 and 232 in games four and five, the lead was too great for the Ladyjacks, giving Nebraska their third win, (1,044-1,022). 

In their Inaugural season, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, currently ranked at No. 7, came up big in the first three games of the match, with a 190, 199, and a 220. The Cornhuskers started with a four pin lead in game one, while trying to keep a close margin in games two (168) and three (201). Despite tallying a 219 and 155 in games four and five, The Gamecocks closed off the game with a 203 and a 252 giving them a 937-1,064 win and the Huskers first loss.  

In their final match of the day, Nebraska was ready for another top ten opponent, No. 9 Maryville. Nebraska started with a successful start. The Cornhuskers tallied a 238, 206, and a 210 in games one through three, while Maryville provided a 149, 184 and 179 in games one through three. The Huskers sealed the final match of the day with winning scores of 234-176 and 213-199 in games four and five, giving the Big Red their fifth and final match of day one, 1,101-887. 

The action continues tomorrow for day two at 9:30 a.m. (CT) with five sets of traditional matches. The combined results from Friday and Saturday will determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket-play championship tournament. Each team will play three best-of-seven Baker matches to finalize overall tournament placements beginning at 8:20 a.m. (CT).
