Huskers Start Off Strong at ITA Regionals

Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of competition at the ITA Regionals on Friday. The Huskers went 4-7 singles play and 8-0 in doubles competition. Two Huskers advanced in the singles main draw, and all four doubles moved on to the Round 16. 

In doubles competition, the Huskers had a stellar start and advanced to the Round of 32 where pairs Jillian Roa and Maria Taranova, Ana Zamburek and Anfisa Danilchenko, Isabel Adrover Gallego and Raphaëlle Lacasse, and Lucy Loy and Maja Pietrowicz all won and advanced to Round of 16.

In singles play, Taranova started off qualifying for the Huskers and won both matches to advance to the singles Round of 128. Then Taranova continued her success and got the Huskers off to a great start winning 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 128, while Danilchenko won 6-1, 6-0, and Pietrowicz won 6-1, 6-3 against Arkansas State’s Rebecca Brody, as all three advanced to the Round of 64. Pietrowicz's main draw run ended in the Round of 64. The graduate transfer lost 6-1, 7-6. Loy and Roa played in the consolation draw Round of 64. 

Zamburek, Gallego and Lacasse all earned a bye and started their singles run in the Round of 64. Gallego advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 victory, and Lacasse, Zamburek and Danilchenko fought to a third set, but lost and moved to the consolation draw. Taranova advanced after winning 6-4, 6-3. 

In the consolation draw, Roa won 6-2, 6-1, and moved on to the consolation Round of 32. Loy was defeated 6-4, 6-1 in the consolidation and ended her singles run. 

Dates and times for the doubles Round of 16 and singles Round of 32 will be announced at the conclusion of today’s play. Roa will play in the consolation draw on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. (CT). Doubles play is set to start at 9 a.m. (CT). For the main singles draw, Taranova will begin competition at 9:45 a.m. (CT) and Gallego is set for 12:45 p.m. (CT).
